On November 25, 2024, the Syndicat mixte des gorges du Gardon carried out the autumn site visit in partnership with the Pont-du-Gard site. A senior biology class and eco-delegates from the Lycée Dhuoda in Nîmes benefited from this outing. Accompanied by Sonia Sabatier, head of Mission Paysage & Patrimoine Mondial, 24 students aged 15 to 17 discovered the Mémoire de Garrigues site at Pont-du-Gard.

The young people were able to discover a site that is emblematic of ancestral agricultural cultures and the links that co-exist between biodiversity, ecosystems and agriculture. They learned about vineyards, olive groves and cereal crops, as well as truffle oaks and silk mulberry trees. The heritage aspect was also addressed, through the capitelles and charbonnières, for example.

Afterwards, the youngsters moved on to the banks of the Gardon, where Sonia focused on the links between planting century-old trees and the consequences of climate change, as well as on the choices made to make the area more comfortable for tourists.

Along the way, the guides were also able to show off some of the garrigue plants they had previously worked on in the herbarium.
